“Cool Rides”

Yep, I’m still doing the cool rides. Currently working on a commissioned 1949 Caddy Coupe Deville, in between other cool works. Thought I would share the pattern process that I use.

Drawing and finished photo below,

I usually stand back to get a good look of where I want to start to section off.  You can see that the sections have been numbered; these will now be my pattern pieces. All of the rides that I have designed have approximately 20 or more pattern pieces. I really love to use vintage fabric remnants. Sometimes I’ll also use pieces that I have painted on cotton canvas fabric. As usual, heavily stitched using Valdani cotton threads.

If you’re in the So-Cal area, you can see my work at the Avantgarden Gallery (On-going) located in the beautiful historic Santora in Santa Ana, Soft Expressions Upstairs Gallery July/August 2012, located in Anaheim, 5th Annual Tustin Fine Art Walk October 2012, located in downtown Tustin. Hope to see you soon!

Havin Fun!

Fiber Art @ The Santora

My sweet Gary assisted me in hanging my artwork, or should I say I assisted him. We had fun chattin with Ellen, one of the co-directors for the Avantgarden Gallery. Very cool to have my fiber art displayed here in my hometown of Santa Ana, California. Gifted artists are wonderfully represented here. Many thanks to OCFA for providing all of us with fantastic opportunities. If you are in the area, please stop by and visit for awhile, be sure to grab a bite at Memphis @ the Santora. “Magic Bus”

My latest car design. This Lil’ cutie will be auctioned off to benefit a wonderful organization SAQA,  info here  http://saqa.com (News/Events) I really am enjoying the car series. My goal was to make 10, I can see myself making many more.  This one has approx. 20 little pattern pieces that I made after sketching the car from a funky old photo. As most of you know, I like lot’s of color, and as usual its heavily stitched….

Lower right is a full view 12 x 12. On the left is a snippet detail pic. My sweet hubby Gary  gave me a list of cool cars  that he wants me to do as well. On the list is Ford Thunderbird, Pontiac GTO, El Camino, Corvette, and I’m sure he’ll add a few others!

Note: If you would like to see these cool rides up close and personal, check out Avantgarden Gallery, located in the historic Santora arts building downtown Santa Ana coming June 2012. In addition, I’ll also have some on display at Soft Expressions Upstairs Gallery this July/August 2012!

What are some of your favorite classics?

“Bed of Roses”

This is my 4th car design. Love the classics, the thought of turning them into cool artworks, out of vintage fabric remnants and thread-work intrigues me.  Gary and I traveled to Arizona recently, we stopped in one of our favorite burger joints, Greasewood Flats in Scottsdale has the most yummy burgers in town. Its a place that seems like its in the middle of nowhere. Filled with yard art and numerous quirky metal art everywhere you turned your head. I spotted this rustic shell of a vintage ford truck and had to design a fabric piece from the pics that I took. Fabric remnants, heavily stitched using Valdani cotton variegated threads. Detail and full pics below, Let me know your thoughts.

Metal Bikes

Love the cool tins and metal decorative art at Hobby Lobby. While in travel mode heading to Arizona, I stopped at a the local Hobby Lobby and bought this very cool  18″ length metal bike. How fun to paint this on cotton.  (below)

Happy to have a large group attending my September classes, the only request they had was that they wanted to paint bikes for a local art project in 2013. Gotta love it! Below is a sample that they approved and want to reproduce on cotton in a variety of colors…. With just a pinch of imagination anything is possible. Let me know your thoughts!

“Rollin Dice”

“Rollin Dice”

24″ W  x  60″H

Designed for Dinner@8 A juried invitational special exhibit.

During our last trip, camera in tow, I took some cool pics as we were coming into

this crazy fun town. Notice the buildings on the left and the Vegas sign ahead. It started with the blue tone background fabric that you see on the left. I cut out three sections and replaced them with different painted fabric so that it would look more like a road.

Curved piecing works well!

Love to step out of the box just a tad, and add a slightly different perspective. Look at the cool swirls in the blue. The Mini is raw edgework and made with vintage pieces that I had taken from my sisters stash last time I was in Arizona.

The buildings on the left are heavily stitched and dry brushed with paint to give that stucco textured look.  Here is a detail shot below,

Had so much fun with this one. Let me know your thoughts!
