Fabric from Tin

I received yet another very cool 24×24 vintage tin tile. This (above) was painted on cotton using just two colors, black and a warm soft rose. Here is the actual tin tile that I used. We have had some pretty nice warm weather, great for playing around with paints and my tins! Looking forward to my Summer workshops. Bring on 2012!

Winter of 51

Something about those vintage classic cars. Gary and I have been to a few of the classic car shows. I’m always in awe of the beauty and history when viewing each car up close. Gary was born in 1951, so I thought it would be most appropriate to add the 51 as part of the title. I so enjoyed doing research for my version of the Ford 1951 Woody!

This was designed for “Noble Seasons” This exhibit will be in travel mode for most of 2012. The theme is Winter.  The title, Winter of 51. My imagination takes off on its own many times.  I really enjoy adding the feeling of warmth to my work.  Many of my pieces are usually started and completed in soft muted warm tones. Now that this piece is completed and the deadline met, its time to get back to my Jazz Singer! she is just about finished!  I’ll post her soon…Enjoy my Winter piece.

Below is the detail along with the full view of  “Winter of 51”

The background was hand painted on cotton canvas, the car is all raw edge work, the tree was done with a cool variegated yarn from the reverse side of the quilt, the snow area was quilted from the reverse as well as the front side. The entire piece is quilted heavily. I would love to know your thoughts!

I’m On The Cover Of The Tustin News!

Thrilled to see my mug on the cover of my local Tustin News. I always have a great time talking with the folks about my style of fabric art. Deborah Stanley was set up just to the right of me. We both had so much fun. A total of 82 artists with awesome artwork were on site this year at the Tustin fine Art Walk. The beautiful sunny weather was just what we had hoped for. Looking forward to next year! Enjoy the pics.

Still stunned that I’m on the cover!

                                                Smaller pic here

I always do a mockup the day before a show just to get the layout design down.

Love to use vintage trunks mixed with vintage fabrics for the tables along with easels, tulle, etc..  There is so much color in my art, I really don’t need much just some simple basic props.

Jazz Singer

Gotta love music. “Jazz Singer.” A fresh piece in the works. Thought I would post the early stage of this piece. Always start with a freshly or slightly older painted background fabric.(I painted this sometime ago.) Cut out paper templates of each section of the design.  The skin tones are wonderful vintage fabrics.

Look at the vintage flowers within her bow area. I still have a paper template to the right pinned into place. Each piece of fabric is pinned into place. She will be stitched down with invisible thread, so that she stays in a placement form. I’ll use these Valdani threads below for skin tone. I love variegated threads that add a cool contrast along with texture. I really love working with vintage fabrics. I’m looking forward to getting her on my frame, let the stitching fun begin!

SAQA Auction Begins September 12th, 2011

Happy to have made this piece “Sealicious” for the SAQA auction 2011.

Its full of color and heavily stitched. Hand painted background. I also used vintage ribbons cut into circles at the bottom. My original plan was to have this a much larger seascape, but I ran out of time and ended up cutting it up.

“Sealicious” is a 12×12 block.. I’ll probably make a couple of book covers and postcards with the rest.

Here is the detail below. Be sure to check out all the awesome work along with much more info at this link here SAQA

SAQA Layers of Memory

After coming back from a baseball game Friday night I was elated to find an acceptance email from SAQA Layers of Memory. “knowing Roy” will be in travel mode for quite some time. Penny and I are thrilled to have this piece travel. This piece is for my sister Pen, who is amazing with her Roy, she works around the clock tending to his needs as well as making sure he is comfortable. He is in his final stage of Dementia with Lewy Bodies.  I had taken several pics of him sitting in his chair on the patio where they live. I was able to catch that slight sparkle in his eyes that once was so bright. A tough piece for me to do, but when I got myself in the moment, it all flowed together. Let me know your thoughts?

Painted Dress Form

Great weekend! Lots of paintin going on. How cool to paint a vintage dress form? Ya think?  I bought this shabby dress form about 5 years ago at a yard sale, I wanted to paint it antique white and sand it down just a tad to give it more of a vintage feel, never got around to do that but still a great yard sale find. So much fun to paint! How would you paint this?  I’ve taken it apart so that I can pull my cotton/silk fabric over it tightly. Here is the original.

Its a great start for a piece of art. This is cotton fabric. I’ll add much more later…This most likely will be a portrait piece.  I’m also thinking that little black dress. Its got lots of possibilities. Let me know your thoughts?

“In Bloom”

I painted this piece (only the backdrop) a few years ago, not sure what I was going to do with it. Eventually I came up with keeping it a full-blown landscape..I had left it just with the trees and butterflies for a short time, I always thought that it needed something else, so I painted in the bench after it was all quilted up. Many times I’ll put a piece to the side until that certain something that it needs clicks…It’s a large piece 40w x 29h. I was thrilled when I received the news that it was selected for inclusion in the special exhibit  In Full Bloom 2011: Floral Quilts in Memory of Helen Pearce O’Bryant. I’ll get to see it on display in Houston! this coming November 3-6, 2011 at the International Quilt Festival/Houston…
